M6 (M17/M18) Motorway Service Area


Location: South of the M6, approximately 5.5km north east of Oranmore, in the townland of Lisheenkyle West
Status: Preliminary Design and Environmental Impact Assessment
Description: The team is currently undertaking preliminary design and an environmental impact assessment. This will enable the extent of the land required for the proposed development to be determined. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) will then be prepared for submission to An Bord Pleanála.

Date Released: 14th July 2016
Transport Infrastructure Ireland has appointed a contractor to carry out a Ground Investigation Contract as part of the Preliminary Design Phase. The scope of the contract includes Trial Pits, Boreholes and a Water Well along with slit trenching along the N18 in Oranmore. The works are due to commence shortly and works on site are expected to be completed within three to four weeks.

Following the conclusion of the site selection study, the preferred site has been identified as Site 2B located south of the M6, approximately 5.5km north east of Oranmore, in the townland of Lisheenkyle West. Following approval from TII, the team is now proceeding to develop the preliminary design of the MSA. The Site Selection Report is available to view below.

Further to a recent Public Consultation event held by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (formerly the NRA) on the 18th November 2015, in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel, we are seeking comments on the sites identified as possible locations for a Motorway Service Area, between junctions 17 and 19 on the M6 motorway: the drawings that were on display on the night are now available to view below.
